Moonlight and Magnolias

What:

The golden age of Hollywood comes to life at Redwood Curtain

Frankly, my dear….this is one rip-roaring farce!

In this comedy by Ron Hutchinson, it’s 1939 and legendary producer David O. Selznick has shut down production of his new epic, Gone with the Wind. The screenplay, you see, just doesn’t work.  While fending off the film’s stars, gossip columnists and his own father-in-law, the formidable Louis B. Mayer, Selznick summons famed screenwriter Ben Hecht and director Victor Fleming, fresh from the set of The Wizard of Oz. He locks the doors, closes the shades, and on a diet of bananas and peanuts, the three men work through, and act out, Margaret Mitchell’s bestseller, and in the process make movie history.

Led by veteran Director James Read, James Floss returns to the stage as legendary producer David O. Selznick, along with RC veterans Jerry Nusbaum as Ben Hecht and Ron Halverson as Victor Fleming.  RC newcomer Andrea Zvaleko joins them as Selznick’s secretary.

“I’m a big classic movie fan,” said RC Executive Director Peggy Metzger.  “So when I read this play several years ago, I knew we had to do it. It’s hilarious AND it’s about a very glamorous and exciting time in movie history.”

“It is really funny,” added Artistic Director Clint Rebik.  “Even if you’re not familiar with * Gone with the Wind*, you’ll find it extremely fun to watch Selznick and Fleming act out the story for Hecht – playing ALL the parts, including Scarlett, Melanie – and even Prissy!”

Designers on the project include Daniel C Nyiri on scenic design, Michael Burkhart on lighting, Catherine L. Brown doing costumes, and Jon Turney on sound.

Moonlight and Magnolias previews on Thursday and Friday September 9th and 10th with $10 tickets, and opening night with Gala reception is Saturday, September 11, with tickets at $17.  Performances continue Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights through September 25.  Cheap date Thursdays on September 16 and 23: two tickets for $20.  A 2pm Sunday matinee takes place on September 19th.  Ticket price on Friday and Saturday (except Gala) nights is $15.

Redwood Curtain’s new home is at 220 First Street (between C and D) in Old Town, Eureka.  Main entrance through Snug Alley.

As the new theatre is intimate with only 80 seats, reservations are highly recommended, and there is no late seating.  Evening performances begin promptly at 8pm, Sunday matinees at 2pm.
