What:
The Playhouse Family Fun Series continues at the Arcata Playhouse with a return appearance by the San Francisco Circus Center and the Clown Conservatory in their new show “Monkey King: A Circus Adventure”. “After the great response last year to the circus schools Alice in Wonderland circus adaptation, we are thrilled to have them back with Monkey King.”, said Playhouse staff member David Ferney. Performances are Friday, Saturday, May 21, 22 at 7 pm. and Sunday, May 23 at 2 p.m.Monkey King is the most beloved character in China, inspiring operas, circuses, TV shows, comics and much more. Monkey’s journey to India as the supernatural bodyguard to a Buddhist priest named Sanzang was written down in the 16th century, after decades of refinement by Chinese storytellers. “Journey to the West” fills 100 chapters, each one more elegant, bizarre and action-packed than the last. The Clown Conservatory has taken some of the wildest adventures, bringing them to life on stage with acrobatics, juggling, puppetry and music. In the style of Commedia dell’Arte, which grew up in Venice at the same time as Monkey King stories ruled China, many of the characters will be in masks. The production is directed by Clown Conservatory director and Cirque du Soleil lead clown Jeff Raz and Felicity Hesed with original music written by Johannes Mager. Masks in the show were made by local mask maker Bruce Marrs and Heidi Rider. The Playhouse Family Series performances are sponsored by Kokotat Watersports Wear and Coast Central Credit Union with additional support for First Five Humboldt. Tickets are $10 adult and $5 children 12 and under or $30 for a family and are available at Bubbles in Arcata. Arcata Playhouse is located at 1251 9th Street in Arcata.
