Merle Schuster: A Look Behind The Redwood Curtain

What:

Starting in 1946, Eureka photographer Merle Schuster recorded hundreds of images of the lumber boom that transformed Humboldt County, showing brand-new mills, burgeoning housing developments, and a host of other changes occurring on the North Coast. Suddenly the “Redwood Curtain,” that had long perpetuated the region’s remoteness, no longer obscured the people and places that ringed Humboldt Bay, and Schuster’s camera work—crisp and carefully composed—recorded the transition in a way no words ever could. Historian Jerry Rohde shares a selection of Merle’s finest photos that document developments from Fairhaven to Fields Landing. Come see Eureka when F Street ended at “Stumpville,” when the California Barrel Company covered Arcata with a haze of smoke, when King Salmon was being carved out of the mud of Humboldt Bay. Come see what lay, 60 years ago, behind the Redwood Curtain.
