Life After AmeriCorps Humboldt Regional Conference

What:

AmeriCorps and California Conservation Corps (CCC) Members in Humboldt County and throughout the North Coast have a huge positive impact on the communities in which they serve. These dedicated individuals can be found making a difference in schools, community organizations, non-profit agencies, small businesses, and in nature. Members give between 10 months to one year of service, and have the option to serve for a second term. On April 29th, 2010 at the Fortuna River Lodge approximately 150 active AmeriCorps and CCC Members gather to learn tips and get resources for a life after service.  The event is titled Service and Beyond. The conference will focus on preparing Members for upcoming opportunities in their lives after their term of service to Humboldt County is complete. Various workshops for Members will be offered on a wide range of topics. These will include: Personal & Professional Development, Career Readiness, Financial Management & Planning, Grant Writing Tips, and more. This conference seeks to help Members that will soon be finishing their service term to further their goals and nurture their futures.

“I attended a workshop on how to prepare a resume at the annual conference in 2008. The workshop presenter not only helped me create an OUTSTANDING resume, but helped me find an amazing internship” said Daena Jordan, an Alumni of Straight Up AmeriCorps.

AmeriCorps is a national service movement that engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in a domestic Peace Corps - getting things done across America by meeting the needs of communities in education, public safety, the environment, health, & other human needs. Humboldt County has a variety of AmeriCorps and California Conservation Corps programs serving many different facets of the community. AFACTR AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps*VISTA, Straight Up AmeriCorps, & TOOTH AmeriCorps are four programs of the Redwood Community Action Agency.  Other programs include: California Safe Corps, Watershed Stewards Project, YouthServe AmeriCorps, Hoopa TCCC, AmeriCorps on Native Lands, and the California Conservation Corps. As special projects of the California Conservation Corps, YouthServe, and the Watershed Stewards Project are sponsored by California Volunteers and administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
