Jalapeno Bagels

What:

During “Arts Alive” on Saturday, April 3rd, local author, Natasha Wing will be at Truchas Gallery in the Old Town, Eureka Los Bagels signing copies of her book, “Jalapeno Bagels.”  Robert Casilla’s original artwork from the book will grace the walls of Los Bagels.  This will be the first time any of this artwork has been displayed in California.

Jalapeno Bagels is the iconic story of a boy named Pablo, who needs to bring a food for “International Day” at his school.  Ms. Wing based her lead character on Dennis Rael, the founder of Los Bagels.  Mr. Rael grew up in a Jewish-Latino household, and this was his inspiration for starting his multicultural café, Los Bagels.  Ms. Wing says, “I wondered what it was like for Dennis as a kid to celebrate two sets of holidays and to eat many different kinds of foods.  I imagined him as a boy living in a house that celebrated traditions from both cultures and he became my main character.”  Ms. Wing has published 19 books to date, with 4 more on the way; several of her titles have been on best-selling lists.

Jalapeno Bagels was first published in 1996 and is now in its’ 15th printing.  The story is also included in several second grade school anthologies throughout the country.  Today, teachers and classes contact Los Bagels, usually asking for “Pablo,” to order jalapeno bagels for sampling.  Go to http://www.losbagels.com/JalapenoBagels.html for more information about Jalapeno Bagels and www.natashawing.comto learn more about Natasha Wing.

Robert Casilla, born in Jersey City, New Jersey, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Casilla is an artist/illustrator of Hispanic background and has illustrated many multicultural children’s books, such as The Little Painter Of Sabana Grande, Jalapeno Bagels, The Legend Of Mexicatl and First Day In Grapes.  He has also illustrated a number of biographies, including ones about Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, Jesse Owens and Simon Bolivar.

Two of his original illustrations will be on display, as well as 5 limited edition, framed giclee prints.  To learn more about Robert Cassila, go to http://www.robertcasilla.com or http://robertcasillafineart.com/

The artwork will be displayed throughout the month of April.
