What:
Greenhouse Boardshop presents Innersections (2010) a Movie Premiere benefit for Surfrider Humboldt and Arcata Skatepark Phase II Friday, November 26 at Arcata Theatre Lounge, 1036 G St in Arcata. Doors open at 7 p.m. and movie starts at 8 p.m. Cost is $6, all ages and a benefit for Surfrider Humboldt and Arcata Skate Park Phase II.
Innersection is a surf movie. The movie is the climax of each Innersection year; four rounds of competition, 25 qualifying surfers, a year of interviews and behind the scenes stories. But the final product is always a new Innersection DVD release. This projects stands at the forefront of a long tradition of surf films popularized by Taylor Steele himself. It is the next evolution of Momentum, Campaign and Stranger Than Fiction, the year’s defining high-performance surf film.
For the last two decades, the world’s best surfers have always competed behind the scenes for their own section on Taylor Steele’s next surf movie. Innersection.tv now takes the action out from behind the curtain and opens it up to the world. Interviews with cinematographers and surfers, stories behind the sections, member voting for the winners, and an ever-expanding audience of active participants. Working with established filmmakers, pro surfers build their own 2-3 minute surf sections and upload them to the Innersection.tv website during one of four contest periods. Innersection members view the sections and help determine which ones will become part of the final DVD.
The online sections are kind of like audition tapes. Once a surfer is qualified for the DVD, then they really get to work improving clips, refining their concept and perfecting their section. That way, the DVD is something all new and packaged with creative intros and plenty of bonus features from the year-long project. When the DVD premiers in December, Innersection members vote for which surfer has the best section. With $100,000 prize for the winner, it’s going to be very competitive.
Innersection isn’t just a single surf movie, it’s a system for creating a fresh high-performance film every year. Not only that, there’s a whole range of Innersection spin-offs projects. For example “Innermission.” The four winning filmmakers pick names from the 25 qualifying surfers (add four wildcards to fill out the group) and then take off on a 10 day time-limit to shoot and edit a ten minute surf movie anywhere in the world. Each team has a $20k travel budget and an extra behind-the-scenes cinematographer to document their travels, trials and adventures. The four sections create their own Innermission movie, and the behind-the-scenes creates a TV series.
As a user-generated film project, Innersection speaks to the vast, widespread community of surfers. Winners range from large meccas like Australia, the US and Hawaii, to smaller areas like New Zealand and Indonesia. The online community is widespread around the world, and growing with every round. The support has been amazing, and it’s getting bigger every day. We appreciate your interest. Riders include Alex Gray, Joel Parkinson, Marlon Gerber, Flynn Novak, Ben Bourgeois, Gabriel Villaran, Ry Craike, Brenno Dorrington, Marco Giorgi, Kelly Slater, Josh Kerr, John John Florence, Clay Marzo, Pat Gudauskas, Ozzy Wrong, Peter Devries, Craig Anderson, Matt Meola, Cory Lopez, Luke Cederman, Nate Tyler, Mike Losness, Dylan Graves, Mikala Jones and Nat Young
