Acoustic Gestures
What:
Christ Episcopal Church is pleased to present in concert Acoustic Gestures featuring finger style guitarist Az Samad and classical guitarist Steve Lin on Tuesday, August 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the church (15th and H Streets, Eureka). A new way to experience acoustic guitar music, they will perform both solo and duo sets, merging the contrasting yet complimentary sounds of steel and nylon strings. Their programming will cover Baroque, Latin American, Celtic, New Age, and Contemporary Pop genres. A suggested donation of $10 will help support Christ Church’s music outreach ministries for underserved children in Humboldt County.
Steve Lin has concertized throughout the United States, Italy, the Philippines, and Taiwan. He is acclaimed by Classical Guitar Magazine as “a confident player with a powerful sound, quick hands, and a solid musical memory”. Steve was the first prize winner at the 2006 Boston GuitarFest Competition and the 2001 East Carolina University Guitar Competition. A recording artist for VGo Recordings, Steve has released two albums. The first, Eliot Fisk Series Vol. 1, dubbed “innovative and exciting” by Minor 7th Acoustic Guitar Music Reviews. His second CD, Imagen features music by Barrios and Lauro, which Classical Guitar Magazine called “brilliant” and “virtuosic”.
Currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area, guitarist Az Samad has performed in festivals and venues in New York, Boston, San Francisco, Connecticut, West Virginia, Austria, United Kingdom, Singapore and Malaysia. Az has studied guitar with Eric Roche, Thomas Leeb, Don Ross, Mick Goodrick (Gary Burton Group), David Tronzo, John Stowell, Jimmy Wyble, Ben Monder (Maria Schneider Orchestra) and Bryan Baker (Steps Ahead). Az has been a faculty member for the Berklee College of Music Summer Guitar Sessions since 2007 where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in Jazz Composition and Guitar Performance. He completed his MA in Jazz Studies at San Jose State University, and is now working on his second solo album, a follow-up to the now rare out-of-print CD, “Acoustic Gestures.”
