What:
Westhaven Center for the Arts November exhibit features a retrospective of Connie Butler’s work from 1963 to the present, opening Sunday, November 7 from 1 - 4 pm. Ms. Butler’s early works include woodblock prints and pencil drawings, moving in the 1990’s into stone and wood sculptures, biodegradable urns, oil pastels, and a variety of cards covering several decades. “Lately I’ve been having a lot of fun making clay pieces from ocarinas, to vessels, to a Cookie Jar Monster, ” said Connie. “THE WORKS is a reflection of my life as an artist. It is my way of telling the truth, of laying the ancestors to rest, and trying to give some balance to our society in transition. My art has carried my heart in meaning through these many years and I hope some part of it touches your heart and carries some meaning forward into the future for you. “However, it’s time to start anew. This collection of decades of work needs to move on and find new homes in the world. Prices are set to accommodate everyone,” she added. Ms. Butler graduated from UCLA in 1961 in Applied Arts and studied bronze casting at Cal State Long Beach. While living in Sonoma, CA she carved in black walnut, and after moving to Trinidad in 1993 worked in soapstone, plaster, as well as cast bronze. Since 2001 Ms. Butler has been curator of the Westhaven Center for the Arts, organizing shows featuring many Humboldt County Artists. Her work can be found on her website: conniebutlersculptures.com. THE WORKS runs through December 12 at WCA. The Center is located at 501 S. Westhaven Drive, three miles north of McKinleyville. For more information call 677-9493.
