A Sunday Bouquet of Brass

What:

The Christ Church Concert Series presents the second of three “Sundays at 4” summer mini-concerts, on July 25, 4 pm, at Christ Episcopal Church (14th & H Streets, Eureka).  The free concert of music for organ and brass instruments will be performed by local musicians.

The concert will feature a reprise performance of a Suite for Organ and Brass Quintetby Craig Phillips, enthusiastically received at this year’s Rhododendron Festival Concert.  The Suitewill be performed by Douglas Moorehead, organ and the Humboldt Bay Brass Quintet (Gilbert Cline and Frederic Belanger, trumpets; Matthew Morgan, horn; Toshi Noguchi, trombone; and Kearney VanderSal, bass trombone).  Commissioned in 2001, the Suite is a major work for organ and brass in three movements.  Following an exciting dialogue between the organ and brass, the piece ends with wall-shaking thunder of full organ and fortissimo brass sounds.

The program, presented by Gilbert Cline, will include demonstrations played on such things as a garden hose, animal horn, shofar, and maybe even a vuvuzela.  In addition to the major work by Phillips, brief works for brass duo, trio, quartet and quintet will be performed with explanatory remarks about the works and the instruments interspersed.

The concert is free and open to the public.  For more information, visit www.christchurcheureka.org/concerts.
