The Rebirth of Environmentalism

What:

ARCATA, CA — The Environmental Protection Information Center (EPIC) will host author Douglas Bevington at Northtown Books in Arcata on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. Bevington will talk about and sign copies of his new book The Rebirth of Environmentalism: Grassroots Activism from the Spotted Owl to the Polar Bear.
The book examines the history of grassroots activism in the conservation movement of the last 25 years. Bevington looks at the victories and losses the movement experienced and how the activists who participated helped change environmental law and policy. In particular, Bevington focuses on the forests of the Pacific Northwest including those on the North Coast.
“Doug’s new book is very interesting because instead of looking at the big national environmental groups, he examines the small, grassroots non-profit groups that are making a big impact on environmental law and policy,” said Scott Greacen, executive director of EPIC. “This should be a great event allowing for a lively discussion about the history of the environmental movement on the North Coast and it’s future.”
Bevington is the Forest Program Director at Environment Now, an environmental grant-making foundation based in Santa Monica, Calif. He earned his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz where he wrote his dissertation that would later be transformed into his new book.
The event is free and open to the public and donations to EPIC are welcome.
