The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee

What:

HLOC presents the Tony Award winning 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee in the College of the Redwoods Forum Theater, from April 30th to May 16th.  Putnam is a hilarious new musical that pulls few punches as it delves into the hearts and minds of six students who become finalists in their county spelling bee.  The kids all face tough territory, with parents who are critical, absent, or obsessively present - but in the process of the competition, each child finds a new definition of themselves, and a certain liberty of spirit that is at the cusp of becoming adult.  Putnam is geared for audiences middle school and up; younger children are likely to enjoy the music but may not comprehend all of the edgy humor!

Evening shows for Putnam are Fridays and Saturdays, April 30th & May 1st, May 7th & 8th, and May 14th & 15th at 7:30 pm. Sunday Matinees are May 9th & 16th at 2 pm.  Tickets are $12 general and $9 for students & seniors; advance tickets are available by calling 445-4310.  You can also pick up tickets with cash or check at Threadbare Dancewear on the Plaza in Arcata.  (VISA is only available over the phone or at the door.)

Our first weekend of Putnam features local celebrities as contestants within the Bee - on opening night we will have Bob Doran, Monica Topping, Rex Bohn and Bonnie Neely.  Then on Saturday, we’ll be joined by Betty Diehl, Clif Clendenen and Jeff DeMark.  Following shows will draw volunteers from the audience — if you’re interested in participating, check in at the Contestant Booth on the night of the show!
