Doris Niles Humboldt County Science Fair

What:

The annual Doris Niles Humboldt County Science Fair will come to the Humboldt State University West Gym next week, March 15 through 19, 2010.   This year, the Fair features 337 projects in the categories of life science, earth and space science, physical science and math, engineering and inventions.  Projects are submitted by students from 40 of the county’s elementary and middle schools who qualified for the fair after competing in school or regional fairs earlier in the year.

On Monday morning, March 15, students and their advisors will begin setting up exhibits.  Backboard judging will take place all day Tuesday, with judges evaluating how well the students have visually explained and displayed their projects.  Final project judging and student interviews will take place Thursday morning, March 18 between 9 a.m. and noon.

All of the exhibits will be available for public viewing on Thursday evening from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Friday, March 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.   The fair will close with an awards ceremony on Friday, March 19, at 7 p.m. in the new Humboldt State University Lumberjack Arena.

At the county fair, more than 110 volunteer judges, including Humboldt State University and College of the Redwoods professors, school teachers, business persons, and community members evaluate the projects and assign awards.  Recognitions include the Doris Niles perpetual trophy, grand prizes, special sponsor awards, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals in each grade level represented. Top projects earn their creators the opportunity to compete in the California State Science Fair in Los Angeles, May 17 and 18, 2010.  Organizers hope to send up to 25 local students to the state competition this year.

The annual Doris Niles Humboldt County Science Fair is sponsored by the Humboldt County Office of Education’s Rising Stars Foundation.  The Rotary Club of Eureka and Humboldt State University provide major support to the event.
