Discussion and Book-signing with Mary Sukup
What:
Artist and author, Mary Sukup will hold an interactive discussion and book signing event for her book “Patternseer.” This event is titled “Spiritual Practice as the Foundation for Art”. The event will take place at The Ink People Center for the Arts (411 12th St. between E & F streets in Eureka, CA.) on Friday, July 10th 2009, from 5:30pm to 7:30 pm. People of all ages are welcome to come meet this inspirational and talented wise woman as she shares her treasures; her art, her book, and her soulful journey in an intimate setting.
Mary Sukup will have her art adorning the Brenda Tuxford Gallery in The Ink People Center for the Arts throughout the month of July in a gallery show titled “The Changing Times, Prayers for the World by Nine Wise Women.” Mary will be one of the nine wise women who have their art displayed in this show.
The following are some quotes about Mary from some of the other artists that will be in the July 2009 show, as well as some quotes from artists and poets that were quoted in her book.
“Originally from Sacramento, CA., Mary Sukup has resided in Alaska, Maui, Humboldt County, and now resides in Pipestone Minnesota, but is returning to live in Humboldt. She is an artist with a unique and profound vision.” * Libby Maynard, Artist & Executive Director of The Ink People Center for the Arts*
“Mary Sukup appears to me to be a very humble person. She thinks things out carefully and if she can’t understand something she goes into prayer and meditation, and then follows her intuition. I haven’t seen her for many years and I’m very happy to be in this art show with her. We’ve had some good conversations lately.” Teresa Whitehawk, Artist
“During the time that I have known Mary, I can say that she is one of the few people who has stuck to her path and didn’t allow other things in life to distract her from that path.” Skye, Artist
“Mary Sukup is a talented and very nice person.” Leatrice Mikkelsen, Artist
“Sukup’s work has the presence of icons. Her symbolic language includes images of people, animals, and landscape. These inhabit, intersect, and define intense color fields: as spirit more than as form. The juxtaposition of colors sets up visual vibrations increasing the impact of the enclosed symbols. Like Kandinsky, Sukup uses color as an equivalence of music. Hers, however, is the music of the sacred chant.” Janet Essley, Artist
“…touches my soul. A new page in my 82 year life, exposing me to new ideas, thoughts, visions; the paintings are exquisite.” Marian Nicholson, Poet
“Artist Mary Sukup is to be congratulated for her desire to share her journeying and the work itself ranks with the top artists of Maui. The work is sincere and honest. The acrylics themselves are graceful and evocative…” * Sue Nash for Island Currents (12/13/97)*
