Dias de Los Muertos Celebration
What:
Local celebrations are planned in November for Los Dias de Los Muertos-The Days of the Dead with free events for all ages. El Dia de Los Muertos–the Day of the Dead is a traditional event in Mexico and in many Mexican American communities, to remember deceased family and friends whose spirits visit the earth once a year. Unlike Halloween, El Dia de Los Muertos is a reminder that life and death are part of a natural cycle, and that the spirits of those we care about are always with us. Altars and Ofrendas (offerings) are a way of honoring their lives and, in the spirit of the Mexican revolution and in contemporary Chicano tradition, are an opportunity to share community concerns and may take the form of posters, murals, music, sculpture, and live performance.
Music and dance are featured on Sunday, November 1, 1-6 p.m. at the 7th annual Community Celebration at the Bayside Grange Hall. Enjoy Mexican brass band music, Folklorico dancers and indigenous Danza. Try your hand at traditional crafts, or bring a picture, story or memento of a loved one to place on the community altar. Traditional Mexican foods will be available for purchase.
Build your own altar, and view altars constructed by members of the community at the 5th Annual Day of the Dead Exhibition at the Ink People Center for the Arts, 411 12th St. Eureka. Individuals, groups, organizations and schools are invited to contribute their altars to the exhibition. The a festive opening reception on Saturday, November 7, 6-9 pm will feature a community altar, traditional dance, family crafts, and refreshments.
Information on the construction of contemporary and traditional altars, foods, and decorations is available on request, as well as a curriculum guide developed by the Mexican Museum of San Francisco. These community events for all ages are a collaborative effort of volunteers, businesses and local organizations, including Humboldt Comunidad, Bayside Grange, Ink People Center for the Arts, Accion Zapatista, PARA, YES-Puentes and Rita’s Restaurants & Specialty Foods. For more information on any of these events call 442-3320 or sguerra@humboldt1.com
