What:
The Fortuna Branch Library will offer four free creative writing classes for adults on Thursday evenings June 4, 11, 18 and 25, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in a fun and relaxed setting. Early sign-up is recommended at the library, which is located at 753 14th Street in Fortuna.
The writing workshops will be conducted by local writer and editor Marilyn Davin, who lives in Ferndale. Davin is a UC Berkeley Art and Literature grad who has worked as a news reporter, taught English as a second language, and produced corporate newsletters and video productions. She continues to write for both local newspapers and edit technical documents from her home.
The workshops will first focus on determining student’s needs, writing backgrounds, reading preferences, creative writing experiences, and their aspirations — for poetry, short stories, historical fiction, novels, plays, or other venues. This information will influence the structure of the tailored workshops, including reading materials and writing assignments.
Topics for discussion will cover the essentials of the writing experience, such as the power of observation, getting started, finding an authentic voice, and the nuts and bolts of writing itself. Participants will have an opportunity to share their writing with others, provide their peers with feedback, and to discuss their own favorite writers and styles.
The creative writing classes are sponsored by the Mel and Grace McLean Foundation. Please call the Fortuna Library at 725-3460 to register.
