Community Healthcare/Budget Crisis Forum

What:

The Humboldt County chapter of Health Care for All is presenting a free community forum on California’s state budget crisis on Thursday October 7th at 7 pm at The Eureka Women’s Club, 1531 J St.

Knowledgeable speakers will explain the origins of the budget crisis, the impact of state budget cuts on our community, and what must be done to prevent recurring budget crises. The presentation will also address the contribution of spiraling health spending to the state deficit and how state single payer health reform; publicly funded, privately delivered health care for all; would control costs and create savings.

The speakers at the forum will be Kathleen Lee, HSU professor of Political Science; Phil Smith-Hanes, Humboldt County Administrative Officer; Jim Lindburg, Legislative Advocate for Friends Committee on Legislation California; and Sarah Rogers, Health Policy Analyst for State Senator Mark Leno. The discussion will be moderated by Melanie Williams and there will be an opportunity for speakers to answer questions from the audience.

Expansion of Medi-Cal under national health reform is expected to cost the state of California three billion dollars a year. State single payer reform was projected to decrease state health spending by the same amount while creating additional savings in employee health costs for city and county governments.
