Chamber Players of the Redwoods
What:
Chamber Players of the Redwoods, an association of residents who play chamber music, , will present works by Beethoven, Praetorius, Josquin des Pres, Thomas Morely and others in a benefit concert for the Friends of the Trinidad Library Building Fund at 3:00 pm on Sunday June 6th, 2010, in the City of Trinidad Town Hall.
The concert will open withSweet Flower String Quartet, a group new to the series, performing Ludwig van Beethoven’s landmark First String Quartet, Opus 18 No.1, published in 1801. This quartet alerted the musical community of Vienna that the young Beethoven was on his way to becoming a musical force with potential to succeed Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Mozart at the highest level of Viennese musical circles. The quartet players are Allen lesser and Gwen Post, violins, Aryay Kalaki, viola, and Helen Ann Reid, ‘cello.
Viols, Recorders, Krumhorns and All, another group new to the series will appear second. This type of ensemble is often called a “consort,” a term which identifies it as performing music written between the 13th and 17th centuries, plates on string, wind, and percussion instruments which existed during that period. In recent years, musical research has made much early instrumental music available for today’s listeners to enjoy. The consort will present 10 such pieces by German, Flemish, French, English and Italian composers. Performers are David Abell, Nona Kraus, Terry Kramer, Jan Futrell, Jeanne Pendergast, and Carolyn Moskowitz, who directs the ensemble.
Closing the concert will be Trimusica, performing Beethoven’s seldom-heard Trio No. 4 Opus 11 in B flat, published in 1798, featuring pianist Ellen Weiss, clarinetist Gwen Ayoob,, and ‘cellist Mark Creaghe. This work,, modeled on an earlier piece with the same instrumentation by Mozart, is the first of two trios Beethoven composed for the combination of instruments. The composer subtitled the piece “Gassenhauer’, using the German word for “street song” because the final section is a set of variations on a well-known melody.
This concert is the eighth community chamber concert in a series which began in 2007.
Proceeds from donations by listeners at this concert will benefit the Friends of the Trinidad Library Building Fund. A “Meet the Players” reception will follow.
