Chamber Musicians of the Redwoods

What:

McKinleyville CA Chamber Players of the Redwoods, a county–wide chamber musicians’ alliance, will present four North Coast chamber music ensembles performing works by Haydn, Bach, Jean Berger, Leonard Bernstein and others on Sunday November 7 at 2 pm in the Morris Graves Museum of Art in Eureka. The concert is free.

The Sweetflower Quartet (Allen Lesser and Gwen Post, violins; Aryay Kalaki, viola and Helen Ann Reid, ’cello)  made its debut in June on the final concert of the 2009-2010 season for Chamber Players of the Redwoods. For this concert, they will present J.S. Bach’s celebrated string orchestra work Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, in a version for string quartet.  Sweetflower Quartet is one of the three ensembles featured on this concert   which has appeared previously on the Chamber Players series.

Another returning group, North Coast Brass Ensemble (Tom Hyde, trumpet; Ronite Gluck, horn; Dan Aldag, trombone and Fred Tempas, tuba) will perform Leonard Bernstein’s * Fanfare for Bima, Le Cinema Muet (The Silent Movie)  * by Pierre Max Dubois, a scherzo by Felix Mendelssohn, Brass Polka by the British composer Joseph Horovitz,  Arthur Frackenpohl’s * Sedalia and Back Home Again in Indiana *by Ballard MacDonald and James Hanley.

Joseph Haydn, the pioneering classical composer who developed the symphony and the string quartet, will be represented by his *Quartet No. 63 in B flat * (the famous “Sunrise Quartet” from 1796), performed by the Meadowood Quartet, Betty Bliss and Marilyn Page, violins;  Stefan Vaughan, viola and Eric Jones, ’cello,. Meadowood Quartet  is returning for a fourth appearance on this series.

Joseph Hazen, flute; Holly * MacDonnel, viola and Mark Creaghe, ’cello, comprise the new group on this program, 2D&C Trio. * They have chosen Jean Berger’s *Trio * for their debut. The composer, German by birth, lived in France and Brazil and became an American citizen in 1943.

The audience is invited to remain for a “Meet the Players” reception after the concert
