On Sunday, July 13, join Redwood Region Audubon Society and the California Native Plant Society for a free Butterfly, Bird, and Plant Day Hike to Waterdog Lake on the western edge of the Trinity Alps Wilderness. Pass through diverse mountain habitats, including forest regenerating from the 1999 Megram Fire. Scramble to the top of North Trinity Mountain (6,342 ft. elevation) look for butterflies. The trail starts at 5,300 ft. and gains about 1,000 ft (but is not too steep). Bring lunch, snack, at least 2 quarts of water, sturdy shoes, and layers of clothing. Meet at 7:30 a.m. sharp at Pacific Union School (3001 Janes Rd, Arcata) to carpool for the 2-hour drive to the trailhead northeast of Hoopa. Return by 6 p.m. For more information, call Gary Falxa (707-476-9238).
