Blue Lake Turns 100!

What:

This April 23rd marks the 100 year anniversary of Blue Lake becoming incorporated as a city. The City of Blue Lake, the place “where sunshine and sea air meet,” in it’s past was once known as a resort area with hotels, entertainment, fishing, swimming and a robust logging industry.  Today, Blue Lake is home to Mad River Grange, Blue Lake Family Resource Center, Wah-nika Women’s Club, Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theater, Blue Lake Chamber of Commerce, Mad River Brewery, and other small businesses and community organizations.  To mark this centennial event, the city is planning two days of festivities on Friday, April 23rd and Saturday, April 24th.  The public is invited to attend. The Blue Lake Centennial event will kick of with a ceremony at 6:30 pm on Friday night at Prasch Hall which includes a Proclamation, slide show of historic photos featuring Blue Lake and surrounding areas, presentation of the color guard by local boy scouts, acknowledgement of past mayors and council members, a Native American blessing and song and filling of a time capsule.  At 8pm., Four on the Floor Theater will present a portion of their ELEMENTAL performance, which will include a lantern procession with members of the community walking from Prasch Hall to the Blue Lake Cemetery where a giant shadow play will be performed about the history of Blue Lake.  After this, two movies, Annie & Mary Rail Trail and KEET’s – the Making of Wildcard will be shown in the Carlo Theater at Dell’Arte.  On Saturday the day begins with a Mad River Grange breakfast from 8-10:30 am., with candy sales to support the local teen group and garden starts available by the Community Gardeners.  This will be followed by presentations, games & activities at Blue Lake School from 11-1:30 pm.  At 2 pm. Third Base! Theater will meet at the flag pole at City Hall to take those interested on an historic houses tour.  The Blue Lake Museum, The Firehouse and the Library will be having open houses throughout the day.  Skinner store will be open from 1-3 pm., with information tables from our local SCOP program, Neighborhood Watch, RCAA, Annie & Mary Trail Group and other community groups & organizations.  Beginning at 12 pm. the Mad River Brewery Tasting Room will be serving a special Centennial IPA and hosting local bands; Tumbleweeds, The Lost Dogs, The Brendas & Kulica.  Food will be available to purchase from Blackberry Bramble BBQ’s booth set up at the brewery and Stardoughs Café, which will feature a special menu of recipes popular 100 years ago.  Kinetic sculpture rides and a fundraising event start at the brewery at 4 pm. with additional bands that evening.  To conclude there will be a $1 skate night at Prasch Hall from 6:30-9:30 pm. On both days the U.S. Post Office will have a special cancellation stamp with commemorative envelopes available that have been designed by Blue Lake artist Elaine Benjamin. For more information please visit the city’s website at www.bluelake.ca.gov or contact Blue Lake City Hall at 707/668-5655.
