Bike49 Kick Off

What:

Bike49 will be spending the next 14 months pedaling through 49 states, educating students in classrooms across the country, promoting bicycle travel, and inspiring folks to live lightly on our planet.

On May 16th, the four rider team of bike49 will be leave Arcata on the 15,000 mile journey.  The four riders, all students of Humboldt State University, invite the community to join them in the first of many miles starting at noon from the Plaza.  People are welcomed to pedal for a few miles or all the way to Patrick’s Point and camp out.

Bike49 has created an adaptable lesson plan that incorporates geography, environmental science, and health education. Teachers can choose up to four centers, like drawing your dream bike, unpacking a fully loaded bicycle, or brainstorming solutions to environmental problems. These presentations are not just about teaching sustainability, but about inspiring students to dream big and create goals that test their strengths, challenge their bodies, and fill their lives with adventure and fun.  ”We have had a great reaction from the teaching community” says Sara Dykman, a rider and organizer.  ”We already have a dozen schools lined up, but welcome teachers to contact us about setting up a presentation if we go through their area or close by.”

Matt Shiff, another rider and organizer has always dreamed of going on a long ride. “Inspiring students to fill their lives with adventures seemed like the perfect tour for me”

Email bike49 at bike49@gmail.com if you or someone you know would like to host a presentation. Sign up for emails, track their progress, or make a donation to the “food/camp/bike repair fund” at bike49.org.  And of course, ride and ride and ride.

Media: You are welcome to join us for any part of the bike ride or overnight camping.  We will be winding through Arcata, then onto Mad River Road to the Hammond Trail, and then Scenic Drive to Patrick’s Point.
