Betty Peugh Sweaney Collection Presentation

What:

Curator, art professor, author and Trinidad Museum director Ron Johnson
will present a talk about the splendid Betty Peugh Sweaney Collection on Saturday,
March 20, 2010 at 2 p.m., Trinidad Museum, 400 Janis Court, off Patricks Point
Drive, Trinidad.  There is no charge.  Arrive early as seating is limited.
Johnson, with considerable assistance from Jennifer Wright and
Coleen Kelley Marks, have spent months researching, repairing,  cleaning, and organizing the Sweaney basket and object collection now on view in the Native American room at Trinidad Museum.
The Betty Peugh Sweaney collection is remarkable in its quality and that it is from an Indian family.  Betty and Willard Peugh cared for the collection for nearly fifty years.  Trinidad Museum is honored to have been given much of the large collection and to have the loan of the remainder for this exhibition.    The ceremonial regalia is loaned each year for dances at Hoopa.  Although no written information about the collection was kept, Betty Sweaney shared some of her memories, which are included in a beautiful color catalogue accompanying the exhibition and for sale at the museum for $16 per copy, or $15 for
Trinidad Museum members.
The depth and diversity of the collection give a wonderful picture of Indian traditions from earlier generations of Karuk, Wiyot, and Yurok heritage.  The Peugh family’s Indian ancestry is Karuk, which partly explains the extensive Karuk representation in the collection, which includes basket caps for work and ceremony, men’s ceremonial regalia and objects, stone tools and bowls, basket bottles, baskets in the tourist trade, utility baskets, lidded gift baskets, and wall mats, a baby rattle and a visor.
Trinidad Museum is open Thursdays through Sundays from 12:30 to 4 p.m.  Volunteer docents are pleased to show visitors all five of the exhibit rooms
in the recently restored 1899-1900 Sangster-Underwood home.
Inquiries may be directed to 677-3816 or 677-3883 during open hours at the museum.
