Audubon/California Native Plant Society Field Trip to Waterdog Lake/North Trinity Mountain

What:

On Saturday, August 13, take part in a plant, butterfly, and bird day hike to Waterdog Lake and North Trinity Mountain. This free public field trip is cosponsored by Redwood Region Audubon Society and the North Coast Chapter of the California Native Plant Society. This area is famous for butterfly diversity, as the 2-mile trail goes through through diverse mountain habitats: white fir and Sadler oak; shrubby regeneration from the 1999 Megram Fire; creekside mountain alder thicket; gravelly bald; wet, rocky hillside; red fir; and a sedgy meadow. The trail gains about 1,000 feet in elevation, starting at 5,300 ft., but is not steep. Bring plenty of food, at least 2 quarts water, and many layers of clothing. Meet 8 a.m. sharp at Pacific Union School (3001 Janes Rd., Arcata), or call to arrange another location. The trailhead northeast of Hoopa is a 2-hour drive. Return by 6 p.m., or join an optional camp-out near the trailhead Saturday and possibly Friday nighs. Call leaders Carol (707) 822-2015 or Gary (707) 476-9238 for details.
