On Saturday, July 11, Redwood Region Audubon Society is co-sponsoring a butterfly, bird, and plant hike to Waterdog Lake/North Trinity Mountain with the California Native Plant Society. Hike to this high point in the Trinity Alps Wilderness, passing through diverse mountain habitats, including forest regenerating from the 1999 Megram Fire. Scramble to the top of nearby North Trinity Mountain (6342 ft) to look for butterflies. The trail starts at 5300 ft and gains about 1000 ft, but is not too steep. Bring food, water, sturdy shoes, and layered clothing. Meet 7:30 a.m. at Pacific Union School (3001 Janes Rd, Arcata) for carpooling to trailhead northeast of Hoopa, with return by 6 p.m. For more information, call Gary Falxa, 707-476-9238.
