Beware the Brewster sisters of Brooklyn, New York… especially if you’re a lonely, older bachelor. One drink of these elderly eccentrics’ arsenic-laced elderberry wine could land you buried in their basement! Meet Martha and Abby, a dangerous dynamic duo with a chilling sense of “charity” and an outrageously eclectic supporting cast in a magnificently macabre and madcap masterpiece. The sisters’ crazy but harmless nephew Teddy believes he is Teddy Roosevelt and is in the habit of charging up the staircase as if it were San Juan Hill. Complications set in when their nephew Mortimer learns of the sisters’ activities; and matters get more farcical when another Brewster nephew, Jonathan, a criminal on the lam, along with the strange Dr. Einstein, arrive with the body of their latest victim. One of the theater’s most endearing comedies, Joseph Kesselring’s hilarious farce is an American classic.
*FRT staple Renee Grinnell directs Arsenic and Old Lace*. The production stars FRT’s veteran leading lady Marilyn McCormick as Martha Brewster. This will be McCormick’s 24th role on the Rep stage and some of her memorable performances have been in Lettuce and Lovage, and as Nurse Ratchet in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’sNest. Playing the other Brewster sister is Wanda Sapp as Abby, she’s been seen on the FRT stage as Miss Frame in Lettuce and Lovage, and in To Kill a Mockingbird as Mayella Ewell. Starring as their nephew Mortimer, made famous by Cary Grant in the movie version, is Sam Cord, last seen on the FRT stage as Gary in Noises Off, and on the CR stage as Philinte in The Misanthrope. Joining Sam is his real life love, Brittany Gonzales who was also in Noises Off as Brooke and The Misanthrope as Celimene. Playing Mortimer’s evil brother Jonathon is Lexus Landry who was part of last season’s teen show Bang Bang Your Dead; he was also in The Misanthrope as Clitandre. Playing Jonathon’s sidekick Dr. Einstein, is Evan Needham who played Neville Crane in FRT’s recent production of The Secret Garden, he was also in Cinderella. Rounding out the cast is Steve Fontaine (Teddy), Neal Schoonmaker (Klien/O’Hara) who played Oronte in The Misanthrope, Ferndale’s own Denim Ohmit (Brophy/Dead Guy) who most recently played the lead role of George in The Actor’s Nightmare and who was also in Godspell and Charlotte’s Web. Samuel Dallas McComber (Rev. Harper/Rooney) who was in Anatomy of a Murder at FRT and The Madwoman of Chaillot at NCRT and has served as Co-Set Designer and Master Carpenter for Arsenic and Old Lace. Tom McCarthy (Gibbs/Witherspoon) makes his debut at FRT after performing in You Can’t Take It With You and Moon Over Buffalo at McKinley High School.
