Amazing Race to Fruit and Veggie Fest

What:

The Network for a Healthy California-Northcoast Region Retail Program, Humboldt County Office of Education, North Coast Co-Op, St. Joseph Health System Foundation and Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Branch will host a Fruit and Veggie Fest at the Eureka Co-op to empower low-income families and their kids to make healthy, active living a priority. The event to be held on Monday, May 17, is free and open to the public. Similar Fruit and Veggie Fest celebrations are happening throughout California during the month of May.

As part of the fun, thirty afterschool students from Alice Burney, Lafayette, Grant, and Trinidad Elementary Schools race through various locations in Old-Town on their way to the Fruit and Veggie Fest activities. The race, modeled after the TV show, “The Amazing Race,” will be kicked off by local triathlete, Mike Pigg beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Halverson Park in Eureka. Students will be given “challenges” that incorporate nutrition education, physical activity and water safety. The race will finish at the Eureka Food Co-op located at 25 4th Street, Eureka. The public is invited to enjoy in a variety of activities offered from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. including: Free sample recipes and cookbooks from the Network for a Healthy California, the chance to make smoothies with a bike-powered blender, tips on how to add fruits and vegetables to your child’s meals, and ideas to improve your family’s health.

As California continues to battle an obesity epidemic, events like Fruit and Veggie Fest help engage local families to become part of the solution. Fruit and Veggie Fest activities show consumers on the North Coast, and across California, that even small steps, like adding more fruits and vegetables to meals and snacks, can lead to big health improvements.
