35th Annual Summer Arts and Music Festival

What:

This weekend, on June 4th and 5th, the Mateel Community Center will present the most comprehensive and affordable music and arts festival on the North Coast.  Taking place at Benbow Lake State Recreation Area in Southern Humboldt, the 35th annual Summer Arts and Music Festival will showcase nearly 100 music, dance, theatrical, and children’s performances on 4+ stages; 150 handmade craft, food, and non-profit information booths; an outrageous kid zone; all-media fine arts exhibition; Belly Dance Temple; the Generation Green alternative energy tent; and lots more.

Nestled on a bend of the Eel River amongst towering ancient redwoods, the festival is full of delights for the ears, eyes, body, mind, and soul.  As you work your way between the various stages, you are sure to stumble upon stilt walkers, belly dancers, wandering minstrels, and a vast array of colorful vendor booths which offer everything from food to fine art, plants, massage, jewelry, and other handmade creations.

The all-media fine arts exhibition will feature more than 20 professional artists, and offers patrons an opportunity to both view and purchase artwork by many of our community’s top painters, sculptors, photographers, and mixed-media artists.

The ever-popular Kid Zone comes complete with a jumper, Circus Nature’s 3-Ring Circus of Play, an arts and crafts activity tent, the brand new Sideshow Single-O, and two full days of entertainment on the Youth Stage with performances by Secret Circus, Wacky Dog, Shovelman, Asha Nan, FreeLove Circus, and more.

Featured entertainment on the remaining three stages will include international stars and regional favorites like Lyrics Born, Rebirth Brass Band, MC Yogi, Skampida, Yogoman Burning Band, Bachaco, Jenny Kerr Band featuring Eric McFadden, The Brothers Comatose, LoCura, Shana Morrison & Caledonia, Caroline Aiken, AfroMassive, Scott Huckabay, Alice DiMicele Band, Handful of Luvin’, To Life!, The Real Nasty, Joanne Rand, and the Smokehouse Gamblers, along with a host of the best local bands, dance troupes, and children’s entertainers such as Feet First, Lost Coast Marimbas, Laxshmi’s Daughters, Huayllipacha, NightHawk, Chris & Peter, Some of the Truest, SoHum Girls, Berel Alexander Ensemble, The NPK, Speed Of Darkness, Woven Roots, Top Shelf, Sign 1 Nine, Grass Band, Moogot2, Samba da Alegria, Mod Brothers, Lucky Otis, Something Different, Crossroads, Madi Simmons & The Mighty Redwood Ambassadors, Twango MacCallan, Orphan In The Afterlife, Kindred Spirits, No Good Redwood Ramblers, Vanishing Pints, Dirt Floor Band, Rhythmically Challenged, Lavender Lounge, and countless others.  For the full line-up, performer bios, and other festival information, pick up a copy of the official program guide, out now at local newsstands from Arcata to Hopland.  Additional festival info and stage schedules can also be found online at www.mateel.org.

Gates open at 9:30am with entertainment beginning at 10:00.  Admission is at the gate only for a price of $15 per day or $25 for the weekend pass with kids 12 & under free.  A complimentary festival shuttle is the recommended way to access the event.  It will offer service twice an hour from Redway (Majestic Center), Garberville (Chevron station) and the Benbow Lake and Richardson Grove Campgrounds and will run from 9:00am until after the close of the festival each evening.
