Care for a Menu?
We in the North Coast Journal editorial department don’t have much to do with the production of our annual Menu of Menus restaurant directory. We just use the living Hell out of it like everyone else.
Good news! The 2010 edition is just about to hit the streets, and it’s an 88-page behemoth. This is, far and away, your best guide to dining, fine or otherwise, wherever you are in Humboldt County. These suckers sold out quick last year, and Humboldt County was forced to go menu-less for several months until we got them reprinted. So when you see one around in the next few days, grab it, take it home, treasure it.
Big ups to our colleagues in the production department and the sales department for outdoing themselves yet again on this thing.

It’s easily the most complete restaurant guide in Humboldt County, but it could use a few cartoons.

This Guide is for people who don’t go out, don’t want to think, or are new to the area. Those of use who’ve lived here for at least a few months have all this stuff down. I’ve lived here for 10 years and not once have I ever needed any kind of guide. I know not one person (and I know quite a few) who has ever needed one. Even newbies to Humboldt. Why can’t the NCJ waste paper on something that might actually benefit the community, not increase its already large waistline while helping illegal immigrant workers make more money to send home south of the border?

So, whenever we need information on a restaurant, we’ll just call Jyrk or any person he knows (and he knows quite a few).

Jyrk forgot a class of people, such as myself, who are stuck in a rut dining at the same few places. Thumbing through the menu guide is a sort of wake-up call.
Before I had kids, we used the menu guide whenever we had out-of-town guests. These days, I have a good handle on the few kid-friendly restaurants and the even fewer in-town ones that do take-out.

Yes, he forgot the vast majority. He’s so clever though, sneaking in an ugly, bigoted comment at the end. He sounds like the lovely sort of customer a hard-working waiter is happy to serve.

I like the ones who post their menus. It makes it easy when you’re discussing where to go and what you feel like eating - especially when you are trying to explain the restaurant to out of town visitors who aren’t familiar with them. Also makes ordering take-out WAY easier,
It’s a great thing - you oughtta go out regional like Visitor pubs did.
