Durant to Leave T-S, Launch New Mag

Chris Durant Chris Durant, longtime Times-Standard reporter/onetime ” Fat Guy “/all-time eathquake juker , has informed the Journal (in a World Exlusive!) that he will soon leave the trusty daily to create a “scene zine with a tongue-in-cheek view on local issues.”

(Disclosure: I used to work with him at the T-S.)

Savage Henry — named after a briefly mentioned character in Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas — will be published monthly, with regular updates on its Web site , Durant said. The focus of the publication, which will be run by Durant, his wife Monica, and former T-S entertainment freelancers Sarah Godlin and Josh Duke, will be on music and other forms of entertainment — sorta like Northern Lights (the T-S’s erstwhile entertainment section, which Durant used to edit), only warranting a “parental advisory,” Durant said.

“Our first cover story is [on] the opening of the Eureka Skate Park,” he announced. The format of the magazine will be 8 1/2 by 11, with glossy covers and newsprint inside, and it will likely be distributed at skate shops, head shops and bars, he added. The first issue, he said, should hit the streets no later than early March.

Durant admitted that starting a print publication nowadays might be considered “one of the dumbest sounding business decisions ever,” but he said that the positive response he’s received from advertisers and the community at large convinced him to jump the T-S ship and pursue the magazine full-time.

Oh, and here’s a heads-up to Heraldo and the Mirror : Durant plans to put a bounty on the identities of anonymous bloggers. The Savage Henry Web site will allow people to donate money and submit information on blogger identities. The person who successfylly and accurately outs an anon-o-blogger (the veracity of the info will be subject to as-yet-undetermined criteria) wins the reward.

Good luck to Durant and crew. We had a good run with the Northern Lights and I look forward to seeing what comes of this new project.

Nice. Happy to see you find life after the T-S. Nothing fearful or loathing about that. Especially after they put your baby in a throw-away. Success is the best revenge, my friend.

Good for you Chris. Looking forward to you stirring some sh*t up.

Thanks Monica, Andy and Sharon. And Andrew, since the web site isn’t officially running yet, we have no donations. But I will buy you a beer, or coffee if you prefer, if you tell me who they are.

I’ll take the coffee. Will wants the beer.

It’s tough game, especially in this market - way too many media chasing too few advertising dollars. Did ya try pitching a section to the Eye, the Press, or the Journal? Anyway, good luck.

I raise my ice-cold PBR to you, my gigantic friend. I worry for you, indeed, I always have, particularly that night I saw you on stage as a Republican Duck Hunter (I still have nightmares) but here’s hoping for the best for you, Monica and the kids.

If ya need me you know what to do, just check the HPWBL Hall of Fame and keep in touch. I will help when and however I can.

Good luck! It won’t be long until you’re filthy rich like the rest of us big-time Humboldt publishers. Rock on!

Comment / By Jennifer Savage / Feb. 12, 2010, 8:25 p.m.

Hmmm. Sounds cool and potentially an heir to the great Anthem and Panache legacies – except, DUDE, I am rather dismayed about the name.

Hunter S. Whatever… I’m thinking I still have dibs on anything “Savage” around here! Jeesh.

But, hey! Like Jack says, good luck! Glory, fame and riches lie right around the corner, I’m sure.

Good luck Chris and Monica! It will be good to finally have a publication focusing on the scene here in Humboldt. Knock ‘em dead!

We (A committed group of Clark district neighbors, 2 city council men and the city manager) have been working for 20 months with the city on the aquisition of the Jefferson school site. The Eureka City School district had accepted an offer to buy, we went forth with a grant application for the playground and an expensive feasibility study, Eureka City School district blindsided us and took an offer (for less money) from CR to purchase Jefferson School . This is a contentious issue, we started with public scoping meetings at the Warfinger to see what the people of the community wanted and needed at this public site. We, the citizens of Eureka have paid for this property once through the assesment as a school and are even willing to pay for it again. We were the only bid during the public agency bid period. The people of Eureka and the Clark district were clear that they wanted a neighborhood facility with opportunities and resources for the children and families of the neighborhood we (the committee) worked tirelessly interviewing potential renters and reviewing their “programs” to see if they were in keeping with the desires of the citizens. CR has plans to intensify use of the school building, put a parking lot in our park :( and more. I think this would be a great story for your Mag. Please contact me for more information. Its so freaking great to see this drama queen crap invoking sack of dung to leave this place. He only made the Times-Slandard even worse. Didn’t know it was possible

SVFFM, you sir, or ma’am, are a piece of cowardly shit.

Thanks to everyone else.

Good Day.

If it’s going to be either/or, then I gotta go with the big man. You may have many stellar qualities in real life, but your nom de blog doesn’t get to claim them.

Bottom line: “Sun Valley Floral Farms Mole” is a fictional character, poorly drawn.

Chris Durant is a man.

End ay fookin story.

Best of luck outing the Heraldo’s and the Mirrors of the Humco blogosphere (sorry about the premature postulation).

I certainly have no problem with web anonymity, but when the authors of the aforementioned blogs launch ad hominem attacks time after time, all the while hiding behind their anonymity, then they should have the courage to make these attacks with their names attached. HumCo would be more a more civil place.

Why is it that the Hank Sims of the HumCo Journalistic world have no interest in outing these supposed bloggers when they continue to push out news without doing the journalistic due diligence that the newsies must go through before publishing?

One gets the nauseating feeling that more than a few of the local journos are actually feeding these blogs.

Hell, it’d be an enormous story if the Heraldo’s were operating from the NEC (and why do we get the feeling that Hank actually has a pretty damn good idea who they - does anyone really believe its one person - are), or if the Mirror was an Arkley front.

Go forth and slay those dragons, sir.

Haters have no justification. They show up and all are “oooooooh, I just used my real name and genuine IP address to make a commonly-repeated, non-inflammatory, run-of-the-mill, politics-as-usual statement… chew on that.”

Psssshhhhhtt, anonymous bloggin is king. Ain’t no future in this “journalistic integrity” fluff. If a blog “journalist” says something wrong, they get called on it immediately for all to read on the same page. With a newspaper, we gotta wait days until the editors decide to publish some crappy counterpoint letter to the editor if they even receive one. And after that, we gotta wait more days until someone counters that letter to the editor. Too slow, fuck that.

Anyone who knows is not about to tell y’all. Some of the folks that know don’t even let on to who they know that they know. And, the last person they are about to tell is some newspaper reporter. I know some newsies and when they question me, I don’t know anything. So, good freakin’ luck with this being on the outside looking in, not knowing shit.

Comment / By TomPaine / Feb. 16, 2010, 2:29 p.m.

Yes, verily I attest to the above commenters astute observation that anonymous political, social, philosophical or judicial commentary must be done in the open, with real names attached to those who would sully our great nation’s dedication to free and open discourse.

We shall no longer be a party to “highly-placed sources” within various administrations of government. Nay, we demand a full and open public square, where dissent shall be named, where agreement must come with a face attached, where speech is bundled up and tightly wrapped in severe restrictions on who may say what, when they may say it and how they must identify themselves before they say it.

It’ll be sooo much more civil that way.

I got some credible info. I see this one guy always buying 24 packs of PBR cans at the Ray’s Food Place in Dogtown. I thought I seen him buying batteries one time, presumably for some type of electronic blogging device. He routinely cops some of that Duane Flatmo brand firewood too so he probably blogs instead of chopping wood. Where do I collect these ducats?

Comment / By Hank Sims / Feb. 16, 2010, 9:05 p.m.

53 weeks a year, brah! Or, you know … 40, at least.

But yeah, yeah — your fictional online Dwarf avatar has +15 Implacability points. I get it.

Comment / By Mr. Nice / Feb. 16, 2010, 10:14 p.m.

For serious, I think that guy at Ray’s is the Humbug. Or the graphics dept guy. Who else buys PBR?

I know a friend of a friend of the elusive “Carson Park Ranger.” The shady cat who runs Ernie’s Place? Seen that dude at the Harris General Store.

I’ll give you a hint for free. Why don’t y’all go ask somma those hippies from the Arcata inner sanctum who Heraldo is? It’s not Stillman. I know you’s thinking it’s gotta be Alex, but it ain’t. A couple of peeps know. I will tell you who knows for 50% of future snitch monies.
