SCORECARD ON SCHOOLS

by Tiffany Lee-Youngren

LISTED BELOW ARE THE RESULTS OF THE STATE Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program's Stanford Achievement Test administered this spring in all California schools.

More than 4 million students in grades two through 11 took the test, California's first statewide exam in four years. The fill-in-the-bubble, multiple-choice exam published by Harcourt-Brace was used to test students in reading, mathematics and language arts. High school students were also tested in science and social science.

HUMBOLDT COUNTY SCHOOLS Score Breakdown

The numbers represent the average scores in each grade and subject by percentile. For example, if a school's second-graders scored at the 45th percentile in reading, it means they did better than 45 percent of the nation's second-graders. The 50th percentile is considered the national average.

The first percentage listed under each school shows the proportion of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunches, a commonly used indicator of socioeconomic status. The second percentage represents the proportion of limited-English proficient students in 1996-97, the most recent year for which records are available. For schools with populations of less than 1 percent LEP students, the LEP percentage is listed as "N/A," or not applicable.

To protect students' confidentiality, schools and/or grade levels with 10 or fewer tested students are not listed. Scores for county continuation schools are also available but are omitted in the tables.

STAR scores for all California schools and districts are posted on the Internet at http://star.cde.ca.gov
