(March 12, 2009) My neighbor is planting
A “Victory” garden,
Behind a home
She has owned forever.
She is old enough
To remember the Depression,
And probably knows better
Than to wait and watch.
My grandparents
Never quite recovered from it,
And filled their shed with scraps
Well into their 80s.
When my grandfather died,
I spent days searching
For 100-dollar bills,
And found quite a few
To my grandmother’s delight!
I can see the Ferndale Bottoms
From my bedroom window,
On a rare sunny day
As the clouds roll in,
It is sure to rain.
