Comedy Tonight: Thursday, Nov. 2

Savage Henry Comedy Club presents Double Trouble, hosted by local comedy star Evan Vest. The premise is simple: Every comedian in the audience tosses their name into a hat, two names are drawn at a time by the host, and those folks have to share a stage and improvise for a spell, for better or for worse. Seems promising; find out for yourself at 9 p.m. for a sawbuck (aka $10 to those of you younger than either of our last two presidents).

Photos: A Flotilla of Witches on the Bay

Posted By on Tue, Oct 24, 2023 at 11:26 AM

A large coven of witches appeared under the Samoa Bridge on Saturday for the fourth annual Witches Paddle organized by Jody Himango and Patty Costanzo. The Dancing Magickal Witches of Humboldt County offered their lively performance first, before more than 40 witches entered the water on their stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, canoes and an inflatable raft.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, Christine Fiorentino and fellow Witches Paddle participants left the Samoa Bridge boat ramp and headed west on Humboldt Bay into a stiff wind.

The flotilla of paddling witches headed west against a stiff breeze past the Bonnie Gool dock, the Adorni Center and the Woodley Island Marina before their wind-assisted return to the Samoa Bridge boat ramp.

Himango, who lives on the Samoa Peninsula, was pleased with the number of paddlers this year. Four years ago, her local-event poster for the nation-wide Paddle event invited participants to "Take to the streets and the water. Let's demonstrate our strength and solidarity in a fun, beautiful way." Mission accomplished again in 2023, based on the turnout and the smiles on the participants’ faces. See the slideshow below for highlights of the day.

Tonight sees the kick-off of not one, but two local culture festivals. First up, it’s the 12th annual Savage Henry Comedy Festival. There will be shows scattered around quite a few local venues, so instead of getting lost in the outfield with the details, let me give you my pick. Kyle Kinane headlines the gig at the Savage Henry Comedy Club with two gigs at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., featuring a line-up chock full of local chucklers. It’s $15 for the early show, $20 for the night time session and $80 for a bracelet that allows you access to all 13 venues like a traveling ambassador. Meanwhile at 8 p.m. at the North Coast Repertory Theatre, the Festival of Dreams: Outer Fringe presents a performance of CTRL+ALT+DELETE, a mature-audience-only retelling of the Genesis story set during the 1990s. Fifteen bucks gets you into this individual performance, but $80 ($64 for students and seniors) is the price for the entire three-day shebang.

Arcata’s lively fall equinox festival the North Country Fair takes place this weekend filling the plaza with happy revelers on Saturday, Sept. 16, and Sunday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (free). Celebrate the diversity of the community and season over two days with 170 art and craft vendors, local food and information booths, two parades, three stages of live music, activities for the kids and a lawn performance area. This year’s theme, “Creating the Flow,” is inspired by the un-damming of the Klamath River, truly something to celebrate. The All Species Parade takes place on Saturday, led by the Arcata Playhouse. The annual Samba Parade led by Samba da Alegria takes place on Sunday at 1 p.m. Help keep the party a zero-waste event by bringing your own pint cup for beer and a refillable water bottle.

Photos: Cannifest Manifests

Posted By on Wed, Sep 13, 2023 at 3:34 PM

People from all over the U.S. showed up for the Cannifest Humboldt 2023 held last Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 9-10, and there were lots of legal smiles on the 21-or-older attendees  at the fenced-in Cannabis Festival and Trade Gathering at Eureka’s Halvorsen Park. A long line-up of live and DJ music on two stages provided the afternoon/evening soundtrack. See the slideshow below for highlights.

  • The local Object Heavy band was one of five headliner performers on the Main Stage at Cannifest 2023 on Saturday.

Attendees could sample cannabis for free or at bargain prices at many vendors, unlike Cannifest here in 2017, when a medical card was needed to partake. The breezes off Humboldt Bay reduced the chances of contact highs at the open-air event, and the few beer venders and Seed Swap Circus areas were fenced off from the cannabis-consumption area.

In addition to the music, the event featured a mix of on-site events and activities, including the Cannifest Bowl Headstash Championship, the Cannabis Marketplace and Lounge, the Makers Market, an Immaculate Seed Swap Circus tent, the Humboldt Grow Games (though no participants showed up on Saturday), the popular Ganja Games, lots of local food vendors and an educators speaker schedule at the amphitheater. Headstash Championship judges worked their way through assigned Top Flower samples from 20-plus competitors.
